LisAni! Live 2018 Saturday Stage Live Report

The performers of the Saturday Stages were these 7 groups consisting of CHiCO with HoneyWorks, ClariS, GARNiDELiA, May’n, OLDCODEX, Saori Hayami and TrySail

LisAni! Live 2018 took place at the Nippon Budokan between the 26th of January to the 28th of January 2018.

The performers of the Saturday Stages were these 7 groups consisting of CHiCO with HoneyWorks, ClariS, GARNiDELiA, May’n, OLDCODEX, Saori Hayami and TrySail in alphabetical order.

The first act to take the stage for LisAni! Live Saturday Stage was ClariS. ClariS is a musical duo consisting of vocalists Clara and Karen, often depicted by illustrations drawn in their likeness to maintain their anonymity.

ClariS began their setlist rotating between their happy-feel-good singles and energetic synthpop singles with “Connect”, “irony” and “SHIORI”. All three of these songs were very popular anisong singles, hyping up the crowd for what is to come after. The ClariS setlist was also accompanied by graphics display and white colored laser light shows fitting the theme of ClariS.

Just before finishing off their setlist, ClariS performed their newest single, titled “PRIMALove”, which is the ending theme for the currently airing anime series BEATLESS. It was a great treat for the fans to be able to hear the full version as the single is set to only release a month later in February 2018. “PRIMALove”, like irony, is a very synthpop single which harkens back to their very first single release back in 2010 as both songs were written and composed by the same collaborator.

Ending off their setlist was their hit single “Hitorigoto” to a rousing audience, whom you can tell were really looking forward to hearing this song. “Hitorigoto” was one of the standout favorites out of ClariS’ discography and of anisong in general of 2017.

Saori Hayami
Following up after the energetic performance was Saori Hayami. Saori Hayami is a very popular not only as a voice actress but as a anisong artiste as well.

Beginning off her setlist was the single title “Yume no Hate Made” and the coupling track from said single titled “SIDE SEAT TRAVEL”. “Yume no Hate Made” feels like an exciting song backed by a violin and castanets that make one feel like they’re experience a flamenco dance performance on stage. Whereas “SIDE SEAT TRAVEL” is a standard Saori fare of a light and slow ballad which feels like something you’d hear on a car ride home from a tiring day of work.

She then takes a seat and performs “Yasashii Kibou”, her debut single, but a bossa nova arrange of it, turning the fast and energetic song into a slow and wonderful ballad with only the string instruments and her vocals remaining, letting her strong vocals stand out for this amazing rendition.

Saori ends off her setlist with her upcoming new single as well, titled “Jewelry”, a very upbeat and happy song sung to the tuned of a young girl looking toward her future, very fitting to the setting of the remake of Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Chapter.

Unlike most other anisong artistes, Saori’s concert experience feels more like attending a live performance at a jazz club. Instead of excitedly jumping up and down to the beat, one would be sitting in a comfortable leather seat swaying your head to the wonderful tunes warmly belted out by Saori.

CHiCO with HoneyWorks
The third artiste to perform was CHiCO with HoneyWorks. HoneyWorks was originally a creative unit making their own original VOCALOID songs, but have since made their major debut teaming up with the vocalist CHiCO forming the group CHiCO with HoneyWorks. Every song in their repertoire has a back story setting to them, mostly with a female protagonist and her one sided love experience which grabs the hearts of their many female, and male fans.

They begin their setlist with “Koiiro ni Sake” and “Ai no Scenario”, both of which are very staple HoneyWorks love song which gets the fans excited from the beginning.

Continuing the trend that the previous two artistes have set, HoneyWorks also debuted their latest single titled “Nostalgic Rainfall”, which is the opening theme song for the currently airing anime After the Rain. “Nostalgic Rainfall” follows the trend of the song having a story following one sided love of the female protagonist, fitting perfectly with the story of After the Rain.

After a short MC session, HoneyWorks performs their debut single “Sekai Wa Koi ni Ochiteiru” which the fans were looking forward to hear, as this is one of the most popular songs in their discography.

They finish their setlist with two very exciting rock songs “Kyou mo Sakura Mau Akatsuki ni” and “Pride Kakumei”, both of which were the theme songs to the very popular anime Gintama. From start to finish, HoneyWorks makes everyone in the audience feels good with the exciting yet happy list of songs.

The fourth group taking the stage was OLDCODEX. It was the first time they were performing at LisAni! Live in 4 years. OLDCODEX is a musical unit consisting of vocalist Ta_2, also known as the popular voice actor Tatsuhisa Suzuki, and chorus singer as well as painter YORKE..

You might wonder why is there a painter in a musical unit? OLDCODEX is an alternative rock unit where YORKE. paints on an ever-evolving canvas to the rhythm while vocal Ta_2 performs on stage. To OLDCODEX, this is their expression of music, garnering them the adoration of their many fans.

They begin off their setlist with two of their most popular songs, “Dried Up Youthful Fame” and “Rage On”, both of which are immensely popular to the female fanbase thanks to their tie-up anime Free!. They continue this trend with their next song, “WALK”. All three of these songs has vocalist Ta_2 getting the crowd excited via his heavy metal-level screaming and booming vocals.

Once again following the trend set-up throughout the evening, OLDCODEX debuts their new single “Growth Arrow”, which will be the theme song for the show Butlers: Chitose Momotose Monogatari set to air later this April 2018. Going to a more harder rock theme in this track, the crowd nevertheless keeps up with the stamina of Ta_2 during the entire performance.

OLDCODEX ends off their performance with “Lantana”. Before they performed the song, YORKE. asks everyone to wave their lightsticks and wave them in any color they like, so they could paint this song with the color they desire. Unlike the previous songs, they end off their setlist with a slower ballad rock title. OLDCODEX shows that while they can get the crowd excited easily, they can also move the hearts of their fans with a soothing ballad.

Going past the halfway mark of the concert, we have May’n taking the stage. Another veteran in the industry like OLDCODEX, May’n begins her 10th year of her singing career by performing at LisAni! Live. May’n is known for her very strong vocals ever since her debut as the singing voice of Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier. Ever since then she has continued to vow fans all around the world singing many theme songs from anime, true to her name May’n, wanting to be the main act of the anisong industry.

She starts off her setlist with some of her more recent songs, with “Chase the World” and “Belief”, two very fast paced rock songs that are a very easy fit for a live audience, getting the crowd excited from the get go jumping from the very start all the way to end.

Just before ending off her setlist, May’n also debuts an entirely new song, this one being a happy-feel-good song titled “You”, which is the theme song for the currently airing The Ancient Magus Bride. “You” is a very exciting new song that is also a representation of May’n 10th year career as a form of thanks to her fans supporting her all these years.

Tying up to the previous song, May’n ends off her setlist with one of the songs that she has continued to sing for her entire 10-year career, a fan favorite “Diamond Crevasse”. Spurring up the memories of fans in the audience with this wonderful ballad, May’n ends her corner with a powerful and stirring performance.

The second to last performer of the evening was TrySail. One of the popular and up-and-coming idol units of the anisong industry, TrySail is composed of three young voice actresses, Momo Asakura, Sora Amamiya and Shiina Natsukawa. Each of these girls have their roles in the unit with Momo being in charge of being cute, Sora being the cool one, and Shiina being the funny member.

You can tell the audience was most excited to see TrySail throughout the evening from how loud their reaction was when TrySail began their setlist with their most popular song, “High Free Spirits”. It is a very powerful rock number firing up everyone, with many in the crowd swinging their Cyalumes to the chorus.

They continue their setlist with “Kakawari" and “Original.”, both of these songs are more light hearted theme songs that focus on the cutesy idol appeal of the members. Also continuing the trend, TrySail debuts their newest single, officially titling the debut as a universal first, “WANTED GIRL”. “WANTED GIRL” is the theme song for the new season of the TV series Time Bokan The Villain’s Strike Back. Going along with the theme of villains, the three girls show of their more sexy appeal through the all black costumes and more villain focused lyrics.

Ending off their setlist is the song “adrenaline!!”, also one of the most popular anime theme song of last year with its very energetic and exciting chorus and dance getting the crowd to chant along with them from start to finish.

Ending off the concert this year is the anisong unit GARNiDELiA. GARNiDELiA consists of vocalist MARiA and composer toku. While they have mentioned many times before they do not sing a particular genre, instead challenging every possible genre out there, they have gone towards a more electronic rock sound in recent times.

They begin off their setlist with an instrumental piece that leads into the highly popular “SPEED STAR”, a very fast paced GARNiDELiA anisong number. This is followed up with also yet another new single debut, “Error”, which serves as the opening theme to the currently airing BEATLESS anime. Unlike your usual anisong pieces, this song goes for a more unique EDM sound to fit in with the futuristic setting of the anime mentioned. It is also a style of music that GARNiDELiA has been wanting to challenge and they really got to shine through with this new single.

Continuing forward, they perform two songs from their more recent single “Aikotoba”, and “Hysteric Bullet”. As vocalist MARiA is also famously known as a dancer from her pre-debut days, GARNiDELiA displays that side in this two-track performance. The first is a very boy-meets-girl lovey-dovey happy single while the second is an energetic fast moving dance focused title.

Ending off the concert for the night, GARNiDELiA performs one of their most famous singles “BLAZING” and their debut single “ambiguous” to the excitement of the crowd’s roar. These two songs lean more towards composer toku’s strengths as a composer as well as MARiA’s powerful vocals to bring out a very hype and exciting finish to a wonderfully constructed concert.
